Like TomG said, it depends on what is being cut. I have a 4300 with 29 pto hp. I cut in the woods and my fields have a lot of obsticles. In my case I went with the 5 footer. My tire width is 5 1/2 feet so I wanted to keep it inside my tires to aid in manuvering. With the decrease in size, I have plenty of power, to pickup the stuff my tires run over, on the next pass. Good luck and I know there are plenty of old threads on this same thing. One of them was from me when I was in your position.

Up here in Vermont, I heard another option. For our garden, we use 8lb. test fishing line. About 10+ feet around the preimeter of the garden. String fishing line about 3 feet high all around garden. When deer come near, they are usually walking. The fish line touches their chest and deters them. It worked to keep the deer out of our garden, doesn't seem to help with the rabbits though.

I have been following this board for about a year now. I have a basic question that I feel that I should know but don't. What is a PIP? From what I read, they sound like they are similar to a recall on a car. Where do I find a list of these to see if my tractor has any outstanding?

I have an 88 Sierra with a 5.7 litre V8. Having a problem with it coming out of 4wd after about 20 minutes of use. When I start it, seems to be fine, but after warming up, it comes out of 4wd and will not go back in. My machanic installed a new solinoid that engages the front axle when shifted into 4wd, but that only seems to do it a little quicker and nothing else. Hoping that someone else has had this problem, as the snow is already here in VT and need 4wd to plow my 1/2 mile driveway up the side of a mountain. Thanks for any help.

I have made the decision to buy a splitter. Going to go with a PTO pump rather than tie into the tractor hydraulics. Wanted to know what is the most reliable splitter from you that have and use them. I have a 4300 JD. I have seen many different types but wanted to get it straight from the horse!

I did look at the woods. Went with the MX5 and don't regret it. I have my rear wheels pushed out so they are wider than my cutter. I have a lot of woods and it has proven helpful to have it between the tires. Good luck, I'm sure you will enjoy your 4310.

I have a JD4300 Hydro. Have a chance to buy a new 3 pt. splitter at a used price. Has anyone used one with a tractor this size and how did it go? I use 100% wood heat and am killing my back with the axe.

Thanks Guys. Bernie, if I didn't see it with my own eyes, I wouldn't have believed it. It was definitely there. Talked to my dealer and he said that JD could very well have changed the link. Didn't seem to be too sure of himself. Told me that I was safe to skip it. I do have the fitting in the clutch housing. It helps to know that there is a reference to a version with only one fitting. Thanks again.
